The Sun

Pulse Creative, The & Partnership  |   2012 - 2018   |   Creative Director

The Sun. The Pun. The Scum... The paper that everyone loves to hate has as many fans as it has haters. For some, it is simply a platform on which Jeremy Clarkson relieves his verbal diarrhoea. For others, it's an escape, and a source of much-needed money saving offers, giveaways, bargain holidays, sports news and celebrity gossip.

For me, it was a place to do some great work at speed, and under pressure. Creating bling on a shoestring. Anyway, strap yourself in. We've got a lot to get through.

The Sun and Dreams Beds

One of those, "what are you on about?" briefs, that turned into the piece of work I'm most proud of.

The Sun and Dreams Beds joined forces to help some of the 400,000 children across the UK that don't have a proper place to sleep. Yes - 400,000.

Like many things at The Sun, what was a two-minute conversation about a bog-standard sales promotion turned into me writing a "kids book" on the train into work. In 10-minutes.

10,000 copies were published and sold, massively surpassing the target. And having a few friendly faces to help the cause by reading the book certainly helped...

#Tournamental - EURO 2016
Friends Cheering in Pub
The Sun went full-on Tournamental for The UEFA Euro 2016 Championship. We created a world-first campaign by reacting in 60 seconds to in-game action and producing content in real time to go live in pubs, train stations, airports, and roadside on more than 800 digital poster sites across the UK.

This put The Sun at the heart of the conversation and forefront of fans minds - reinforcing its position as every football fans No.1 choice for the tournament's best coverage.

While the England men's team may have continued their trend for trophies not coming home, we picked up a bunch of awards for the work, including The Drum Out of Home Grand Prix, 2016. Watch below for the full story.

Poster Billboard
Not much to say on this one. It's all pretty self explanatory. The Scottish Sun were launching three radio stations north of the border: 80s, Greatest Hits and Hits.

Via digital OOO home, in-paper, in-app and a TV campaign, we announced the arrival of these bouncing stations the airwaves with some gorgeous baby versions of an icon of the genre.

And the best bit was we got our TV ad in the first take. That, and the launch party was hosted by none other than Pat Sharpe. Sadly sans mullet. And the twins.

Say what you like about The Sun (and you wouldn't be the first), but more families across the UK get to enjoy a bargain holiday and a special day out thanks to their token giveaways.

From 2-for-1 tickets to LEGOLAND, Thorpe Park, SEA LIFE, London Dungeon, and many more - upwards of 2M families across the UK get to save hundreds of pounds on the price of admission.

Here are just a few of the fun ads I got to make on a shoestring budget. I think I managed to save them a few quid in the production budget as you wouldn't get me on a ride for all of the pizza in Italy. Well, maybe.
